Maria Gruzdeva is the winner of the first edition of the "Gabriele Basilico" International Photography Award. The book is dedicated to her project on the city of Tkvarcheli.
Tkvarcheli is a town in the Caucasian region of Abkhazia. It was once an important regional coal mining town, rich and flourishing in the years following the Second World War, before falling into disgrace after the 1992-1993 war. Now it is semi-abandoned. Maria Gruzdeva's reportage work describes the relationship between the social life of the town today, its inhabitants and the extraordinary architecture and landscape that characterise it.
IThe book won the first 'Gabriele Basilico' International Award for Architecture and Landscape Photography, in collaboration with the Order of Architects of Milan and its Foundation, the Gabriele Basilici Studio in Milan and the Studio Marangoni Foundation of Florence.
