Churches and modernity

by Marco Borsotti

Descrizione prodotto

The series entitled Milanese Architecture Itineraries has now been expanded to include a fourth title: “Churches and Modernity”. In producing this book the Ordine degli Architetti P.P.C. of Milan and its Foundation have drawn on the invaluable collaboration of the Archdiocese of Milan which, coordinated by Carlo Capponi, has contributed to extending the original Milanese itinerary edited by Marco Borsotti to comprise the vast Diocese of Milan. On this occasion it is important to emphasize the collaboration of this institution, which has enriched the already excellent work of the author, editors and contributors. “Churches and Modernity” offers an illustrative panorama of the way in which modern Milanese architecture has interpreted a traditional architectonic theme such as that of Catholic places of worship. It shows the complex relationship between typological continuity, changing liturgical requirements and modernity which has produced interesting, sometimes exemplary, results. Not only in terms of architectural solutions, skillfully defined internal volumes, control of perceptive aspects and use of materials but also in the construction of urban spaces which have often renewed the historic relationship between church and city.
