Writings on production and design techniques
The volume is published as part of the research project "Marco Zanuso between construction and design techniques", directed by Bruno Reichlin and Letizia Tedeschi. In the foreword, editor Roberta Grignolo informs us that the book brings together a selection of the writings of Marco Zanuso (1916-2001), chosen from essays, articles, conference papers and lectures. This collection is the first step in the process of promoting the collection of the Milanese architect and designer, donated to the Archivio del Moderno Foundation in Mendrisio by the designer himself in 2000 (p. XVII). The volume opens with a preface by B. Reichlin and continues with a weighty essay by R. Grignolo, Marco Zanuso, between production techniques and design techniques (pp. 1-72), accompanied by a wealth of notes (266). The essay traces Zanuso's thought in the debate, addressing key issues, from the urgency of reconstruction to the potential of building prefabrication, from the knowledge of industrial production processes to the relationship between architecture and design, from experimentation with new materials to the relationship between art and architecture, from the role of the architect in industrial society to so-called “integrated design” (p. 1). The volume then publishes 34 texts and two interviews, illustrated with photographs and original drawings from the Zanuso collection.
