The winning project of the 10th edition of the award for the best social housing projects in Europe is a shelter for homeless women, designed by Vivas Arquitectos and built in Barcelona. Special mention goes to an intergenerational social housing project in Mallorca, by Emiliano López Mónica Rivera Arquitectos.
With its tenth edition, the Baffa Rivolta Prize aims to identify, reward, and publicize the best social housing projects built and completed between January 2020 and December 2024 in the 27 countries of the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Social housing projects are defined as projects completed by both public and private operators, subject to allocation rules, and addressing a demand for permanent or temporary housing that cannot be met by the free market. Particular attention is paid to the overall quality of the built environment and the sustainability of the architectural project.
The Jury, composed of full members Frédéric Chartier, David Lorente Ibáñez, Marco Peverini, Enrico Scaramellini, Paola Viganò and substitute members Maite Garcia Sanchis and Mauro Marinelli, examined the 8 projects submitted in the second phase, out of the 22 originally submitted, and declared the winner Shelter for homeless women, by Vivas Arquitectos (Spain), which received the prize of €10,000.00 and a nomination to the Jury for the next edition.
The Jury declares winner the project because "it creates a space of dignity to a fragile and abused population. This topic is important because the issue addressed is resolved with very high design and construction quality. The relationship with the urban context is concerned, it is not a project relegated to an external area, at the contrary is in a well situated and valuable part of the city. The project features a generous common space, some of which are open to other users. The project has well designed details, easy to comprehend. The project addresses the issue of sustainability using generous bioclimatic spaces and bio sourced materials. This point creates a warm atmosphere, fundamental for the overall quality of the project. The Jury underlines the importance of assuming such social needs transforming them into architectural occasion".
Special mention to 18 Intergenerational Social Housing, by Emiliano López Mónica Rivera Arquitectos, Mallorca (Spain).
“The Jury emphasized the high quality of the project, which was considered exemplary for a small of an infill in an exhibiting settlement in a marginal location, in this case with high tourist pressure, providing housing to residents with an intergenerational scope. The building proposes a reinterpretation of traditional bioclimatic principles with addressing the inhabitants as active users. The public façade shows a humble and respectful relation to the surrounding with precise details, while the internal façade has a more contemporary language and which respond greatly to a functional and bio climatical aspects. Another point of attention concerns the common spaces, which can encourage meetings between residents. The jury emphasizes the need to maintain the quality of architecture in a marginal area; although the project is small-scale, it sets an example for the wider area”.
